Samsung RW33EBSS Wine Cabinet
You don’t have to be a collector of super-pricey fine wines to benefit from a wine cabinet. If you buy your wines week-by-week and drink them straight away, then maybe not. But if you are a member of a wine club, or like to take advantage of great deals from your favourite wine dealer, then a fridge such as the Samsung RW33EBSS is going to help you keep your wines in peak condition until they are ready to drink.
There are two things that most spell disaster for a decent wine being stored for any length of time – high temperatures and temperature fluctuations.
The ideal temperature for storing wine, irrespective of colour, is generally agreed to be around 10–13 degC. At this level maturation proceeds at the right rate – fast enough to develop the wine properly, but not so fast that it degrades and ultimately destroys its character.
Temperature fluctuations can also spell the end for wines, particularly if the cork is not perfectly sealed. Air can be drawn in and expelled from the bottle as the temperature falls and rises, rapidly increasing oxidation.
So, with this in mind, you can see how the environment that most wines suffer – a wine rack in a centrally-heated kitchen, with modern living temperatures of 20+ degC, varying throughout the day depending on cooking – is no place to protect any kind of investment in wine.
The Samsung RW33EBSS is a reasonably-priced solution to the problem. Important features include:-
Digitally-controlled temperature between 4-18 degC. There’s only one temperature zone, but this should be fine if you set it to say 10 degC. However, if you keep only one wine colour and really want to be particular, you could choose a slightly higher setting for red and a lower for white if you wish.
Bear in mind that this is a cabinet for the storage of wine, not for conditioning it prior to drinking – you would still want to chill or warm the wine as appropriate.
Storage capacity for 33 bottles. There’s also a drawer for beer bottles and cans.
UV coating on the door. Triple-layer coating to protect your wine from one of the other great enemies, UV light. The toughened glass door also has a lock, which although would perhaps not keep out a determined pilferer, will deter the curious and under-aged!
Low vibration system to prevent damage due to agitation of your wine. It’s also very quiet.
Smart appearance from the aluminium and glass cabinet and digital temperature display. The interior LED light helps with selection.
Undercounter size 850 x 511 x 550 mm (H x W x D) so will slot in conveniently.
Priced at around £240 – £260, this looks to be a very economical way to improve your wine storage. It’s difficult to see why one would spend considerably more on, say multiple cooling zones when one is sufficient for all but the most demanding connoisseur.
The storage capacity of 33 bottles is not huge either. But I would suggest it’s plenty for most people, who are probably looking to store only their prime purchases, and then not for many years. Everyday wines are probably bought and consumed quickly, no?
For the price of a couple of cases from the wine club, I reckon the Samsung RW33EBSS is a great investment and should ensure that you enjoy your wines at their peak, as they are meant to be.
